Fall Lake & Pond Care | Why it's so important

Summer is over, especially in the north and you’re starting to focus on a (hopefully) long fall and of course the winter that comes after. A question we get asked a lot this time of year is, “should I still be worrying about and dealing with my lake muck and weeds?”

The answer is YES! Here’s Why.

Dealing with your shoreline area is a year round issue for those in the south. In the north however, with fall fast approaching, it’s important to keep in mind that those lake weeds and the muck and sludge that are currently around your lake front will still be there waiting for you next year in the spring.

Have you noticed that every year when spring arrives, the weeds that were there in the summer and fall seem to have magically vanished? Well they didn’t. In fact by not clearing our those aquatic weeds, you just made your situation even worse for the next time around.

Fall is a great time to deal with your aquatic weeds and muck issues for different reasons. In the fall, lake weeds start dying off and going dormant. When this happens they start to drop their seeds that will then settle into your lake, ready to start a new batch of plants early in the spring. The muck and sediment also acts like a fertilizer for the newly planted seeds so they will grow even thicker and heavier in the spring.

Taking the steps now to prevent this cycle from starting is the perfect way to stop lake weeds before they start growing.

DEAD SEAWEED, AND VEGETATION TURNS INTO MUCK
Fall is also the prime season for dying or decaying organics such as dead algae, leaves and twigs to be falling into your lake or pond and begin their process of decomposing over time and becoming your muck issues the following season.

On a final note, as the weather changes, it’s nice to get out on the water and enjoy it. When it turns into a warm sunny day in September, October or even November, it’s a perfect time for doing those “end of the season” projects at the lake. You can make it a fun time and one that will pay off for next year and the many seasons to come.
