Description

Kasco Dock De-Icer Systems

Protect Your Dock, Boat & Waterfront From Winter Ice Damage

Kasco Marine De-Icers protect docks, boat lifts, pilings, seawalls, boat slips, marinas, and other in-water structures by circulating naturally warmer bottom water toward the surface before damaging ice can build around them.

A Kasco Dock De-Icer does not heat the water. Instead, its high-thrust propeller draws denser, warmer water from below and moves it toward the surface. The combination of warmer water and continuous circulation helps create and maintain an area of open water around the structure you need to protect.

Choose from 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP models in 120V and 208–240V configurations. Just as important, choose the mounting method that directs that water exactly where it is needed. Kasco systems can be suspended from the included ropes or paired with Universal, Industrial, swivel, timer, thermostat, and specialty mounting options.

For automatic winter operation, compatible systems can also use a C-10 thermostat, C-20 timer and thermostat, or high-voltage timer control depending on the De-Icer model and voltage.

1/2, 3/4 & 1 HP 120V & 208–240V 31–42 lb Thrust 2 Mooring Ropes Included Multiple Mounting Options Automatic Controls Available 3-Year De-Icer Warranty

Every Kasco De-Icer package includes the motor unit, power cord, and two 20-foot mooring ropes for suspended installation.

Motor Size Matters. Placement Matters Just as Much.

Choose the Horsepower Select 1/2, 3/4, or 1 HP based on climate, dock size, water depth, and the area that needs protection.
Choose the Mount Rope suspension, rigid dock mounting, industrial mounting, bottom positioning, and oscillating options create different water-flow patterns.
Choose the Direction Mount vertically for a more circular opening or angle the De-Icer to push warmer water toward a specific structure.
Choose the Controller Use temperature, timer, or combined automatic control to reduce unnecessary runtime and adapt operation to changing weather.
How De-Icing Works

Move Warm Bottom Water Where Ice Normally Forms

During winter, relatively warmer and denser water settles below colder surface water. A De-Icer takes advantage of this natural temperature difference by moving the lower water upward.

Vertical suspension generally produces a more circular opening around the unit. Angling the unit creates a directional flow pattern that can carry warmer water toward a shoreline, boat lift, slip entrance, seawall, or another vulnerable area.

This ability to control depth, angle, and direction is why choosing the correct mount can be just as important as choosing horsepower.

1/2 HP

2400D

120V model with 31 lb of published thrust. A strong choice for smaller areas and milder applications.

3/4 HP

3400D / 3400HD

Available in 120V or 208–240V with 37 lb of published thrust.

1 HP

4400D / 4400HD

MOUNT

Direct the Water

Use suspension, dock mounts, industrial mounts, specialty mounts, or an oscillator to shape the protected area.

Open water and thin ice are dangerous. Clearly mark de-iced areas with appropriate Thin Ice or Open Water signs, lighting, barriers, fencing, or other safety measures required for your property and local regulations. Never enter the water while the De-Icer is connected to power.

U-Bolt Mounting Kit

Allows the Universal or Industrial Mount base to be attached to a compatible dock piling without drilling into the structure.

STAND

Bottom Stand

A Weeders Digest specialty option for installations where a dock-mounted or rope-suspended setup is not practical. Correct elevation above the bottom is critical.

FLOAT

Horizontal Float

Kasco's De-Icer FAQ discusses horizontal float use for calm locations where ropes or a dock mount are unavailable. Confirm current unit compatibility before choosing this configuration.

360°

Oscillating Attachment

A programmable rotating mount that sweeps the De-Icer through a larger area instead of directing flow in only one fixed direction.

Do not place the De-Icer directly on the pond or lake bottom. Kasco specifically advises against direct-bottom operation. A unit positioned too close to the bottom can lose effective surface circulation and may pull in debris. Maintain adequate bottom clearance.

Mount Comparison

Which De-Icer Mount Should You Choose?

Mount Best Use Main Advantage Important Notes
Mooring Ropes Most docks, boats and simple installations Included, fast installation, vertical or angled positioning Requires secure attachment points above the water
Universal Mount Residential docks, pilings and fixed structures Adjustable depth and angle Uses customer-supplied 1" nominal pipe
Universal + Simple Swivel Docks where flow direction may need frequent adjustment Adds easy rotation Useful for targeting different portions of a slip or dock
Industrial Mount Harsh environments, commercial docks, stronger water movement Heavier-duty mounting system Uses customer-supplied 1.5" nominal pipe
Industrial + Simple Swivel Harsh environments needing directional adjustment Heavy-duty support plus rotation Confirm structure and installation requirements
U-Bolt Kit Universal or Industrial Mount installed on compatible piling Can eliminate drilling into the dock structure Universal uses one kit; Industrial uses two
Bottom Stand Locations without a practical dock/pier attachment point Freestanding positioning Do not rest the De-Icer itself directly on the bottom; maintain bottom clearance
Horizontal Float Calmer water without convenient fixed mounting points Directional surface-mounted positioning FAQ guidance favors calm conditions; verify current De-Icer compatibility before ordering
Oscillating Attachment Large or irregular protection areas Sweeps water flow over a much larger area Call Weeders Digest for sizing and package configuration
Most residential customers start with rope suspension or a Universal Dock Mount. For high-current or commercial locations, consider the Industrial Mount. For large or irregular coverage, ask about the Oscillating Attachment.

Rope Suspension

Included Mooring Rope Installation

Every current Kasco De-Icer includes two 20-foot mooring lines, making rope suspension the simplest installation method for many docks and boats.

Suspend the motor vertically when you want a more circular opening centered above the De-Icer. Suspend it at an angle when you want to send warm water toward a shoreline, dock section, boat lift, or other specific area.

Rope suspension is often sufficient where the unit can be securely supported and there is not excessive wave, current, or tidal movement.

Dock Mounts

Universal & Industrial Dock Mount Systems

Rigid dock mounts provide more control over De-Icer depth, angle, and direction than basic rope suspension.

Kasco universal dock mount positioning a deicer beside a dock

Universal Mount

The current Universal Mount uses a customer-supplied 1-inch nominal threaded or unthreaded pipe. It allows the De-Icer to be lowered, raised and angled to direct flow where it is needed.

The standard Universal Mount is part number 243485. The version with the patented Simple Swivel bracket is 243478.

Industrial Mount

The current Industrial Mount uses a customer-supplied 1.5-inch nominal pipe and is recommended for harsher environments. The standard kit is 243484, while the Simple Swivel version is 243479.

Pipe is customer supplied. Kasco's current guidance states that pipes used with the Universal or Industrial Mount should not exceed 10 feet.
Want a drill-free piling installation? Use U-Bolt Kit 997108K. One kit is used with the Universal Mount and two are used with the Industrial Mount.

Bottom Stand

Bottom Stand De-Icer Mount

The Weeders Digest Bottom Stand provides a freestanding installation option when a dock, pier, piling, or secure rope-suspension location is not available.

It can be useful for pond edges, shorelines, isolated structures, or areas where a De-Icer needs to be positioned away from the dock and aimed back toward the area requiring protection.

Do not place the De-Icer itself directly on the lake bottom. Kasco's FAQ specifically advises against direct-bottom operation. When a stand is used, the system must maintain adequate clearance so the motor is elevated above the bottom and can move water effectively.
Deicer bottom stand with adjustable motor positioning
Bottom-mounted installations are highly site dependent. Depth, sediment, weeds, debris, winter water level and the direction of flow all affect performance. Call Weeders Digest before choosing a Bottom Stand for a difficult site.

Oscillating Mount

Oscillating De-Icer Attachment

The Weeders Digest Oscillating Attachment rotates the De-Icer through a programmable sweep instead of leaving the water flow pointed in one fixed direction.

This can be especially effective for long docks, multi-slip areas, marinas, and irregular layouts where a single fixed flow pattern does not reach every vulnerable section.

Programmable Rotation

Control the sweep so the De-Icer spends its operating time directing water through the area you want protected.

Adjustable Height

The mounting system can be positioned to help match the De-Icer to the required operating depth.

12V Operation

The oscillating mechanism operates from a low-voltage 12V system.

Large Coverage Potential

Weeders Digest markets the Oscillating Attachment as capable of maintaining substantially more open water than a fixed installation when properly sized and positioned.

Comparison of suspended dock mounted and oscillating deicer coverage layouts
Oscillator packages require site-specific sizing. Call 877-224-4899 with your dock layout for package recommendations.

Controllers & Timers

Automate Your Dock De-Icer With a Thermostat or Timer

A De-Icer does not always need to run continuously. Automatic controls let the system react to cold weather, operate during selected periods, or both.

Controller Voltage / Models Control Method Best For
C-10 Compatible 120V 1/2, 3/4 & 1 HP De-Icers Thermostat only Simple automatic temperature-based operation
C-20 Compatible 120V 1/2, 3/4 & 1 HP De-Icers 24-hour timer + thermostat Customers who want both temperature and scheduled control
C-220 208–240V 3/4 & 1 HP De-Icers 24-hour timer High-voltage De-Icer installations requiring scheduled operation
Match the controller to the De-Icer voltage. C-10 and C-20 are 120V controls. Do not connect a 208–240V HD De-Icer to a 120V C-10 or C-20.

Shop Kasco De-Icer Thermostats & Timers

C-10 Thermostat

Kasco C-10 Thermostat Controller

The C-10 is the simplest automatic-control option for compatible 120V Kasco De-Icers. It responds to outdoor air temperature rather than time of day.

Temperature Control

Adjustable operating range is approximately 0°F to 80°F.

30°F Starting Point

Kasco's current manual recommends approximately 30°F as an initial activation setting for many freshwater installations.

2.5°F Differential

After activation, the De-Icer remains powered until ambient temperature rises approximately 2.5°F above the selected setting.

One De-Icer

Each C-10 is designed to control one compatible Kasco De-Icer.

8-Foot Power Cord

The current C-10 includes an approximately 8-foot connected power cord.

2-Year Warranty

The C-10 carries a two-year limited manufacturer warranty.

Best for: Waterfront owners who want the De-Icer to start automatically as outdoor temperatures fall without programming a daily schedule.

View the Kasco C-10 Controller

C-20 Timer + Thermostat

Kasco C-20 Timer & Thermostat Controller

The C-20 adds a 24-hour timer to temperature control, giving you more control over when a compatible 120V De-Icer is allowed to operate.

In normal automatic operation, the De-Icer runs when both the timer period and thermostat condition are active.

0°F–40°F Thermostat

The C-20 temperature control operates over an approximately 0°F to 40°F adjustment range.

24-Hour Timer

Mechanical timer trippers provide 15-minute increments for selecting operating periods.

1-Hour Minimum Cycles

Kasco recommends setting operating blocks of at least one hour rather than frequent short cycles.

Temperature + Time

In AUTO mode, both programmed time and temperature conditions can be used to control operation.

Temperature-Only Option

The timer can be bypassed so the De-Icer cycles according to temperature.

2-Year Warranty

The C-20 includes a two-year limited manufacturer warranty.

Why longer cycles? Kasco explains that De-Icers establish localized currents as they run, so fewer, longer operating periods generally work better than many short on/off cycles.

Sizing & Placement

How to Size & Position a Dock De-Icer

Horsepower alone does not determine performance. Start with the location, dock shape, water depth, average winter temperature, power supply, and the exact structure that needs protection.

1/2 HP

Often appropriate for smaller docks and milder winter conditions when water depth and placement are favorable.

3/4 HP

A common choice for Midwest and northern residential dock applications where stronger winter conditions require additional thrust.

1 HP

Often selected for larger areas, colder regions, or installations needing the highest thrust in the current residential De-Icer range.

Placement First

A correctly aimed smaller De-Icer can sometimes outperform a poorly positioned larger unit.

Vertical vs. Angled Installation

A vertical unit sends warmer water upward and tends to form a more circular opening.

An angled unit creates a longer directional flow pattern. This can be useful for pushing warm water under a dock, toward shore, along a boat slip, or across a shallow area.

Kasco dock deicer vertical installation compared with angled installation
Use expected winter water depth, not summer depth. Seasonal drawdown can leave a De-Icer much shallower than expected later in winter.

Water Depth

How Deep Should a Kasco De-Icer Be?

Kasco's current published North American specifications list a 4-foot minimum depth for the standard De-Icer models. Their installation guidance also commonly positions the unit several feet below the surface while maintaining clearance above the bottom.

Kasco's Top Five De-Icer FAQs states that water shallower than roughly 3–5 feet can make long-term de-icing more difficult because there is less warm water available below the surface.

If the desired protection area is shallow but deeper water is nearby, position the De-Icer in the deeper water and angle the flow toward the shallower dock or shoreline.

Do Not Touch Bottom

If normal operating depth would place the motor on the bottom, raise it so the De-Icer maintains adequate clearance.

Keep Bottom Clearance

Kasco's FAQ recommends keeping the unit at least approximately 1 foot above the pond or lake floor in installations where deeper suspension would otherwise place it on the bottom.

Use Deeper Water

In shallow applications, locate the unit in deeper water when possible and angle warmer water toward the target area.

Avoid Surface Splashing

A De-Icer mounted too close to the surface may splash and lose effective circulation.

Installation

Dock De-Icer Installation Basics

  1. Determine what must be protected.
Identify docks, pilings, boat lifts, boats, retaining walls, slip entrances, or other structures that are vulnerable to ice pressure.
  2. Measure winter water depth.
Account for seasonal water-level changes and maintain adequate clearance beneath the De-Icer.
  3. Choose horsepower and voltage.
Select the De-Icer based on climate, site dimensions, depth, power availability, and desired coverage.
  4. Choose the mounting method.
Use included ropes, a Universal or Industrial Dock Mount, specialty stand, float, or Oscillating Attachment where appropriate.
  5. Choose vertical or angled flow.
Vertical positioning creates a more circular opening; angled positioning directs warm water toward a target.
  6. Connect to the proper electrical supply.
Use a properly grounded, GFCI-protected circuit that matches the De-Icer voltage.
  7. Add automatic control if desired.
Use a compatible C-10, C-20, or high-voltage control depending on your model.
  8. Test before freeze-up.
Confirm motor operation, direction, depth, mount security and water movement before ice begins forming.
  9. Inspect throughout winter.
Weather, snow, wind, water levels and moving ice can change system performance.
Best installation timing: Kasco recommends installing the De-Icer in late fall before ice forms. Installation is possible after freeze-up, but it becomes more difficult and potentially hazardous.

Safety

Dock De-Icer Safety Guidelines

Use GFCI Protection

Operate the De-Icer from the properly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical circuit required for the installation.

No Extension Cords

Do not add extension cords to Kasco equipment. Use the proper factory power-cord length for the installation.

Never Enter Powered Water

No one should enter the water while the De-Icer is operating or connected to electrical power.

Mark Open Water

Use Thin Ice or Open Water signage, lighting, barriers or fencing appropriate for the property and local requirements.

Disconnect Before Service

Disconnect electrical power before handling, adjusting, cleaning, inspecting, or servicing the De-Icer.

Inspect Daily

Controllers automate operation but do not replace regular winter inspection of the dock, power supply, open-water area and De-Icer position.

No De-Icer can prevent every form of winter ice damage. Moving ice caused by wind or current, extreme cold, ice that freezes to the bottom, water-level changes, and other site conditions can exceed what any circulation system can control.

FAQs

Kasco Dock De-Icer FAQs

Which mounting option works best for my De-Icer?

It depends on the site and the shape of the open-water area you need. Included mooring ropes work well for many installations and allow either vertical or angled suspension. A rigid Universal or Industrial Mount gives greater control over depth and direction, especially where waves, tides, or currents make rope positioning less stable.

What does vertical rope suspension do?

Vertical suspension directs warmer bottom water upward and generally creates a more circular opening centered around the De-Icer.

What does angled suspension do?

Angling the De-Icer produces a more directional or elongated area of water movement. It is useful when you need to push warmer water toward a dock, shoreline, boat lift, or shallow area.

When should I use the Universal Dock Mount?

Kasco recommends rigid dock mounting when more stable and adjustable positioning is needed, including locations with more wave, tide, or current activity. The Universal Mount lets you change depth and angle, and the Simple Swivel version makes directional adjustment easier.

When should I use the Industrial Mount?

The Industrial Mount is the heavier-duty rigid mounting option and is suggested for harsher environments. It uses a larger 1.5-inch nominal customer-supplied pipe.

What is the Simple Swivel Mount?

The patented Simple Swivel bracket is available with both Universal and Industrial Mount systems. It allows the mounted De-Icer to rotate so water flow can be redirected more easily.

Can I attach the Dock Mount without drilling into my piling?

Yes, where the structure is compatible. Kasco offers U-Bolt Kit 997108K for drill-free attachment of the mount base to a piling. The Universal Mount uses one kit and the Industrial Mount uses two.

Can I use a Horizontal Float?

Kasco's De-Icer FAQ identifies a Horizontal Float as an option for calmer water where a fixed structure is not available for ropes or a dock mount. Because Kasco's current 2026 De-Icer accessory lineup primarily lists rope, Universal and Industrial mounting, confirm compatibility with Weeders Digest before ordering a float for a De-Icer.

Can I place the De-Icer directly on the pond or lake bottom?

No. Kasco specifically advises against placing the De-Icer itself directly on the bottom. Too little bottom clearance can reduce effective surface circulation and increase the chance of drawing debris into the unit.

Can I use the Weeders Digest Bottom Stand?

Yes, for appropriate site-specific installations. The stand is intended to position the De-Icer when a dock or suspension point is unavailable, but the motor still needs adequate elevation above the bottom. Do not treat the Bottom Stand as permission to operate the motor directly on the lakebed.

How shallow can a Kasco De-Icer operate?

Shallow-water performance depends on the installation. Kasco's FAQ notes that depths below approximately 3–5 feet can make long-term de-icing more difficult because less warm bottom water is available. Current De-Icer model specifications list a 4-foot minimum depth.

How far off the bottom should the De-Icer be?

Kasco's FAQ says that if normal positioning would place the unit on the bottom, raise it so it remains at least approximately 1 foot above the pond or lake floor.

What should I do if the dock is in shallow water?

If deeper water is accessible nearby, place the De-Icer in the deeper area and angle the water flow toward the shallower dock or shoreline. This allows the unit to access a larger supply of warmer bottom water.

When should I install my De-Icer?

Kasco recommends installing in late fall before ice forms. A De-Icer can be installed later, but working around existing ice makes installation more difficult and potentially more hazardous.

Does a Kasco De-Icer heat the water?

No. It is a water circulator. It moves naturally warmer bottom water toward the surface and uses water movement to help prevent or reduce ice formation.

What does the Kasco C-10 controller do?

The C-10 is a thermostat-only controller for one compatible 120V Kasco De-Icer. It turns the De-Icer on as ambient air temperature falls to the selected setting.

What temperature should I set the C-10 to?

Kasco's current C-10 manual recommends approximately 30°F as a practical starting activation temperature. Monitor actual ice conditions and adjust as necessary.

What is the C-10 thermostat range?

The C-10 has an approximately 0°F to 80°F adjustable range.

What does the C-20 controller do?

The C-20 combines a thermostat with a 24-hour timer. In normal automatic operation, the De-Icer operates when the programmed timer period and the thermostat condition are both active.

What is the C-20 thermostat range?

The C-20 operates over an approximately 0°F to 40°F thermostat range.

How short can I set a C-20 timer cycle?

The timer uses 15-minute trippers, but Kasco recommends grouping at least four together for a minimum one-hour operating period. Longer cycles generally establish more useful water circulation than frequent short cycles.

Should I choose C-10 or C-20?

Choose C-10 when you want simple temperature-only automatic control. Choose C-20 when you want to control both temperature and the times of day when a compatible 120V De-Icer can operate.

What controller should I use with a 208–240V De-Icer?

Do not use the 120V C-10 or C-20 with a high-voltage HD De-Icer. Kasco's current control-panel lineup identifies the C-220 as a compatible timer-based control option for 208–240V 3/4 and 1 HP De-Icers. Confirm the exact electrical configuration before ordering.

Can one C-10 or C-20 control multiple De-Icers?

No. Each C-10 or C-20 is intended to control one compatible Kasco De-Icer.

Can I use an extension cord?

No. Kasco advises against adding extension cords. Choose a De-Icer with the proper factory power-cord length for the installation.

Do I need GFCI protection?

Yes. Use the properly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical circuit required for your De-Icer installation.

Can I enter the water while the De-Icer is running?

No. Never enter the water while the De-Icer or other electrical equipment is operating or connected to power.

Should I mark the open-water area?

Yes. Kasco recommends taking precautions around all open-water de-icing areas, including Thin Ice or Open Water signs, lighting, fencing, barriers, or other safety measures required for the location.

Can a De-Icer prevent every type of ice damage?

No. Moving ice driven by wind or current, extreme cold, ice freezing to the bottom, very shallow water, changing water levels, and other conditions can limit any De-Icer's ability to protect a structure.

What is the warranty?

Current Kasco De-Icer units include a three-year limited manufacturer warranty. C-10 and C-20 controls have separate two-year limited warranties.

Where can I get help choosing horsepower, mount and timer?

Call Weeders Digest Product Support at 877-224-4899. Have your dock dimensions, winter water depth, location, available voltage, and photos ready so the complete De-Icer system can be sized together.
