Automated Lake Weed & Muck Removal

Lake Bottom Roller That Eliminates Lake Weeds & Muck

The Lake Groomer is an automated lake weed roller designed to uproot aquatic weeds, disturb organic muck, and maintain a cleaner, firmer swimming area along your shoreline.

Its aluminum rollers travel back and forth across the lake bottom, mechanically disturbing rooted aquatic vegetation and loose organic material. Repeated operation helps prevent weeds from becoming re-established inside the maintained area while working soft muck and sediment away from your beach.

The standard Lake Groomer includes three 7-foot rollers for a total roller length of 21 feet and a 42-foot diameter coverage area. Add up to three more 7-foot rollers for a maximum 42-foot roller assembly and an 84-foot diameter coverage area.

How It Maintains Your Beach

Continuous Bottom Agitation Controls Weeds and Organic Buildup

As the rollers move across the lake bottom, they dislodge existing aquatic weeds and repeatedly disturb the area where new growth would become established.

The same rolling action agitates soft organic muck and sediment. Over time, the maintained area can become firmer as loose material is moved away from the swimming area.

Flexible connectors between the rollers help the assembly follow changes in lake-bottom contour instead of behaving like one rigid tube.

21'

21 Feet Standard

Three 7-foot aluminum roller tubes come standard for a total roller length of 21 feet.

84'

Up to 84-Foot Diameter

Add up to three additional 7-foot rollers for a maximum 42-foot roller assembly and an 84-foot diameter sweep.

280°

Adjustable Sweep Arc

Directional pucks let you set the operating arc from approximately 30 degrees up to 280 degrees.

AUTO

Programmable Cycles

Program the Lake Groomer to complete a selected number of cycles and then automatically shut off.

Deep muck requires a different startup approach. If your shoreline has more than about 5 to 6 inches of muck, begin close to shore with a short operating arc and expand the path gradually as the area firms up. Do not immediately run the full sweep through deep soft sediment. Read the Lake Groomer deep-muck operating guide.
Minnesota permit requirement: The Minnesota DNR requires a permit before installing or operating an automated aquatic plant control device in a Minnesota lake. Review Minnesota DNR automated aquatic plant control requirements. Customers outside Minnesota should check current state, provincial, and local requirements before installation.

Coverage & Roller Options

How Much Area Does the Lake Groomer Cover?

Each roller is 7 feet long. Increasing roller length increases the radius of the maintained area and therefore increases the total diameter of the sweep.

Configuration Total Roller Length Approx. Diameter Connection Notes
Standard 3 rollers / 21 ft 42 ft Included with Lake Groomer
+ 1 Roller 4 rollers / 28 ft 56 ft One additional roller and flexible connector
+ 2 Rollers 5 rollers / 35 ft 70 ft Two additional rollers and two flexible connectors
+ 3 Rollers 6 rollers / 42 ft 84 ft Requires the specified rigid connection between rollers 5 and 6
Six-roller configuration: The manufacturer recommends six total rollers only for relatively flat lake-bottom areas. A rigid connector is required between rollers 5 and 6. Using the six-roller configuration without the required rigid connector can affect warranty coverage.
Uneven lake bottom? Flexible couplers help the roller assembly follow changing bottom contours. A shorter roller configuration often handles highly irregular lake bottoms better than the maximum-length setup.

Features

Lake Groomer Features

Easy Coupler Installation

Flexible roller connectors allow the assembly to adapt to lake-bottom contours. Roller sections attach and detach with a simple bolted connection, making it easier to change the system length.

Adjustable Roller Arc

Set the operating path from approximately 30 degrees up to 280 degrees. When the rollers reach the end of the selected path, the drive system reverses direction and continues the programmed sweep.

Programmable Cycles

The control system lets you select a desired number of operating cycles. Once the programmed sequence is complete, the Lake Groomer shuts down automatically.

The system also monitors operating resistance. Manufacturer information states the drive system reverses when it encounters a heavy obstruction or unusually dense conditions and shuts down if repeated attempts do not clear the obstruction.

Follow all electrical instructions provided with the Lake Groomer.
  8. Set a conservative initial operating arc.
Start with a smaller sweep and confirm the rollers move freely before increasing coverage.
Manufacturer information states the system is designed so one person can complete a standard installation in less than one hour when site conditions and dock configuration are suitable.

Deep Muck Guide

How to Operate the Lake Groomer in Deep Muck

Deep, soft muck creates more resistance than a firm sand or gravel bottom. If the rollers immediately travel into a thick layer of sediment, they can bury themselves and become difficult to free.

For shoreline areas with more than approximately 5 to 6 inches of muck, Weeders Digest recommends gradually clearing the area instead of starting with the full operating arc.

  1. Start close to shore.
Begin where the muck is shallower and the rollers have better traction.
  2. Use a short operating arc.
A 30°, 45°, or 60° path places less load on the system than immediately attempting the full sweep.
  3. Allow the bottom to firm.
Run the cleared section before gradually expanding into deeper sediment.
  4. Increase the sweep in stages.
Move farther into the soft area only after the previous section becomes easier for the rollers to travel through.
  5. Add a Mud Paddle when needed.
The optional Mud Kit adds traction in extreme soft-bottom conditions.
Do not let the rollers remain buried and spinning in deep muck. Excessive resistance places unnecessary stress on the drive system and can make the roller assembly harder to free.

Read the complete Weeders Digest guide to operating the Lake Groomer in muck and sediment.

FAQs

Lake Groomer FAQs

How wide an area does the standard Lake Groomer cover?

The standard system includes three 7-foot rollers for 21 feet of total roller length. Because the rollers sweep around the mounting point, this provides an approximately 42-foot diameter maintained area.

What is the maximum Lake Groomer coverage?

Up to three additional 7-foot rollers can be added for six total rollers and 42 feet of roller length. This creates an approximately 84-foot diameter sweep. The six-roller configuration is recommended only on relatively flat lake bottoms and requires the specified rigid connection between rollers 5 and 6.

What horsepower motor does the Lake Groomer use?

The Lake Groomer uses a 1/6 HP electric motor designed to move the roller assembly through aquatic vegetation, muck, and varying lake-bottom conditions.

Does the Lake Groomer remove weeds or only cut them?

The rollers mechanically disturb and uproot rooted aquatic vegetation throughout the maintained area rather than simply trimming vegetation above the bottom. Repeated operation also helps prevent plants from becoming re-established in the sweep path.

Does the Lake Groomer remove muck?

The rollers agitate loose organic muck and sediment on the lake bottom. Repeated operation helps move loose material away from the maintained area and can help firm a soft swimming bottom over time.

Can I mount the Lake Groomer without a dock?

Yes. The optional Freestanding Kit uses dual auger supports so the Lake Groomer can operate without being attached directly to a dock or pier.

How does the Lake Groomer handle an uneven lake bottom?

Flexible connectors between roller sections allow the assembly to follow changes in bottom contour. Highly uneven areas may work better with a shorter roller configuration rather than the maximum six-roller setup.

What should I do if I have more than 5 to 6 inches of muck?

Start near shore with a shorter operating arc and gradually expand into deeper muck as the maintained area firms. The optional Mud Paddle can add traction in extreme soft-bottom conditions.

Can I automate how many sweeps the Lake Groomer makes?

Yes. The Lake Groomer can be programmed for a selected number of operating cycles and then automatically shuts off after completing the programmed sequence.

How far can I adjust the sweep?

The roller path adjusts from approximately 30 degrees up to 280 degrees.

How deep can the standard Lake Groomer operate?

The standard configuration operates in approximately 4.5 feet of water at the power head.

Can I use the Lake Groomer in deeper water?

Yes. One 3-foot Deep Water Extension increases the operating depth from approximately 4.5 feet to 7.5 feet. Up to two 3-foot extensions can be added for approximately 10.5 feet.

What electrical power does the Lake Groomer use?

The Lake Groomer connects to standard 110V household power through the required ground-fault-protected source. Its power converter supplies 28V AC to the operating system.

What electrical safety features are included?

Current Lake Groomer information lists ground-fault protection, motor-controller short-circuit protection, and an 8-amp circuit breaker on the 28V AC side of the power converter.

Does the Lake Groomer help with zebra mussels?

The manufacturer states that repeated disturbance of the maintained lake-bottom area may help reduce zebra mussels within the operating zone. Results depend on site conditions.

What maintenance does the Lake Groomer need?

Inspect roller connections, mounting hardware, electrical cords, controls, and the drive assembly regularly. Rinse accumulated sediment and debris when needed. Avoid leaving the rollers buried in deep muck and remove the Mud Paddle when additional traction is no longer required.

Does Minnesota require a permit for the Lake Groomer?

Yes. The Minnesota DNR requires a permit for automated aquatic plant control devices used in Minnesota lakes. Check current DNR requirements before installing or operating the machine.

Do other states require a permit?

Requirements vary by location. Check with the appropriate state, provincial, local, or water-management authority before using an automated aquatic plant control device.

What warranty comes with the Lake Groomer?

The Lake Groomer includes a 3-year warranty. Follow the required installation and roller-connection instructions, especially when configuring a six-roller system.

    As good as advertised

Posted by Sterling on 28th May 2021

I was highly skeptical of this product given the price and the fact that fighting mother nature is usually a losing game. However, my wife was very eager to get one so, naturally, we ordered a weed roller with 6 tubes and the tripod. Within a couple hours, we had weeds floating near our shoreline that the Lake Groomer had displaced from the sea floor. In our lake, we have an invasive species called starry stonewart, and it has been a real pain to deal with. We spent so many hours trying to use a lake rake to get that stuff out, and the Lake Groomer achieved more in a couple of hours than we had in a week. This product is well manufactured / high quality and it is efficient. It is expensive and it is no doubt an investment, but I would say it is worth it. I recommend it to my neighbors who are facing similar situations. I am not one to spend other people's money, but there is a good chance that if you're considering buying this item that you already know that you need it. I can vouch for it.

This product is excellent. I am in Ontario Canada and it has changed my lake bottom from muck to a hard packed sandy bottom. My only disappointment is that the screws are not stainless steel and rusted after the first year. This is one area that should be improved. Otherwise, product works great!
