Description

Kasco Dock De-Icer Systems

Protect Your Dock, Boat Lift & Waterfront From Winter Ice Damage

Kasco Marine De-Icers protect docks, boats, pilings, boat lifts, seawalls, slips, marinas, and other waterfront structures by circulating naturally warmer bottom water toward the surface before damaging ice can build around them.

A Dock De-Icer does not heat the water. Its submerged high-thrust propeller draws relatively warmer water from below and moves it toward the surface. The combination of warmer water and continuous circulation helps create and maintain open water around the area you need to protect.

Choose from 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP models with 120V and 208–240V configurations available depending on horsepower. Then select the mounting system that gives you the right depth, angle, and flow direction for your dock.

For automatic winter operation, pair a compatible 120V model with a C-10 thermostat or C-20 timer + thermostat. For a cleaner waterfront installation, add MagnaClips to organize the long power cord along the dock and Protective Cord Wrap where additional abrasion protection is desired.

Horsepower Matters. Placement Matters Just as Much.

Choose the Motor Select 1/2, 3/4, or 1 HP based on climate, water depth, dock size, and desired protection area.
Choose the Mount Use rope suspension, Universal Mount, Industrial Mount, Bottom Stand, or oscillating configurations depending on the site.
Choose the Direction Mount vertically for a more circular opening or angle the motor to direct warmer water toward a specific structure.
Choose the Controller Temperature and timer controls can automate operation and reduce unnecessary runtime.
How De-Icing Works

Move Warmer Bottom Water Where Ice Normally Forms

During winter, relatively warmer water remains deeper in the water column while colder water sits closer to the surface.

The De-Icer moves that lower water upward and creates circulation beneath the surface. The moving water helps limit ice formation around docks, boats, pilings, lifts, seawalls, and other waterfront structures.

Changing the motor's depth, angle, and direction changes where that warmer water travels, which is why the right mounting system is a major part of a successful installation.

Mounting Options

Choose the De-Icer Mount That Fits Your Waterfront

The mounting method controls where the De-Icer sits, how deep it operates, and where the warmer water is directed.

ROPE

Mooring Rope Suspension

Two 20-foot ropes are included. Suspend vertically for a more circular opening or angle the De-Icer toward a specific target.

UNI

Universal Mount

Uses a customer-supplied 1-inch nominal pipe and provides adjustable depth and angle from a dock, piling, wall, or similar fixed structure.

SWIVEL

Universal + Simple Swivel

Adds the Simple Swivel system so the mounted De-Icer can be rotated more easily to redirect water flow.

IND

Industrial Mount

Uses a customer-supplied 1.5-inch nominal pipe and provides a heavier-duty mounting system for demanding locations.

HD

Industrial + Simple Swivel

Combines the heavier-duty Industrial Mount with easier rotational adjustment.

U-BOLT

U-Bolt Mounting Kit

Allows compatible Universal or Industrial Mount bases to attach to a piling without drilling directly into the structure.

Bottom Stand

A Weeders Digest freestanding option for sites where dock-mounted or rope-suspended installation is not practical.

360°

Oscillating Attachment

Rotates the De-Icer through a programmed sweep to move water across a larger or irregular protection area.

Never operate the De-Icer directly on the lake or pond bottom. Maintain adequate clearance beneath the motor so water can circulate effectively and debris is less likely to enter the propeller.

Mount Comparison

Which Dock De-Icer Mount Should You Choose?

Mount Best Use Main Advantage
Mooring Ropes Simple dock, boat, or piling installations Included and allows vertical or angled operation
Universal Mount Residential docks and fixed structures More precise depth and angle adjustment
Universal + Simple Swivel Docks where flow direction may change Depth, angle, and easier rotational adjustment
Industrial Mount Commercial or harsh waterfront environments Heavier-duty fixed mounting
Industrial + Simple Swivel Demanding locations needing directional adjustment Heavy-duty structure with easier rotation
U-Bolt Kit Compatible piling installations Can avoid drilling into the piling
Bottom Stand Locations without a practical dock attachment point Freestanding positioning
Oscillating Attachment Large or irregular protection areas Sweeps circulation through a broader area
Most residential installations start with rope suspension or the Universal Mount. For more demanding environments, consider the Industrial Mount. For broad or irregular waterfront coverage, ask about the Oscillating Attachment.

Rope Suspension

Included Mooring Rope Installation

Every current Kasco De-Icer includes two 20-foot mooring ropes, making suspended installation the simplest option for many docks.

Suspend the motor vertically to move warmer water directly upward and create a more circular opening.

Suspend it at an angle to create a longer directional flow that can target a shoreline, boat lift, slip entrance, seawall, or another specific structure.

Dock Mounts

Universal & Industrial Dock Mount Systems

Kasco Universal Dock Mount positioning a De-Icer beside a dock

Universal Mount

The current Universal Mount uses a customer-supplied 1-inch nominal pipe and allows the unit to be positioned at different depths and angles.

This provides more consistent placement than ropes where wave action, current, or dock configuration makes suspended positioning difficult.

View the Kasco Universal Dock Mount

Industrial Mount

The Industrial Mount uses a customer-supplied 1.5-inch nominal pipe and is intended for harsher waterfront environments that benefit from a heavier-duty mounting system.

Pipe is customer supplied. Confirm mounting location, pipe requirements, depth, and clearance before installation.

Bottom Stand

Freestanding Bottom Stand Mount

The Weeders Digest Bottom Stand provides a freestanding installation option when a suitable dock, piling, or rope-suspension point is unavailable.

This can be useful around shoreline structures, pond edges, and locations where the De-Icer must be positioned away from the dock and aimed back toward the area that needs protection.

The De-Icer itself should never rest directly on the bottom. The stand must keep the motor adequately elevated above sediment, weeds, rocks, and debris.
Dock De-Icer Bottom Stand with adjustable motor positioning

Oscillating Mount

Oscillating Dock De-Icer Attachment

A fixed De-Icer sends its water flow through one pattern. The optional Oscillating Attachment rotates the motor through a programmed sweep so one unit can influence a much broader section of waterfront.

This can be especially useful for long docks, multiple boat slips, marina layouts, and irregular protection zones.

Programmable Rotation

Set the sweep to direct circulation through the specific area that needs protection.

Adjustable Height

The mounting system can be positioned to match the desired motor depth.

12V Oscillator

The oscillating mechanism uses a low-voltage control system.

Larger Coverage Potential

Oscillation can substantially increase the area influenced by one properly positioned De-Icer compared with a fixed direction.

Oscillator packages are site specific. Call Weeders Digest at 877-224-4899 with your dock layout for help configuring the system.

Controllers & Timers

Automatically Control Your Dock De-Icer

A De-Icer does not necessarily need to run continuously. A properly selected control can operate the system according to outdoor temperature, time of day, or both.

Controller Compatible Use Control Method Best For
C-10 Compatible 120V De-Icers Thermostat Simple automatic temperature-based operation
C-20 Compatible 120V De-Icers 24-hour timer + thermostat Temperature control plus scheduled runtime

Sizing & Placement

How to Size & Position Your Dock De-Icer

Horsepower alone does not determine how much water will stay open. Start with the dock layout, expected winter water depth, climate, wind exposure, current, surrounding structures, and available electrical supply.

1/2 HP

A practical option for smaller protection zones and favorable water-depth and climate conditions.

3/4 HP

A common choice for northern residential dock applications requiring additional thrust.

1 HP

Provides the highest current published thrust in the standard De-Icer range for larger or more demanding protection areas.

Placement Matters

Correct depth and direction can be as important as increasing horsepower.

Vertical vs. Angled Installation

Vertical installation generally moves warmer water straight upward and produces a more circular opening.

Angled installation directs the circulation toward a particular dock section, boat lift, shoreline, seawall, or slip and generally produces a longer flow pattern.

Kasco Dock De-Icer vertical versus angled installation

Water Depth

How Deep Should a Dock De-Icer Be?

Current North American specifications list a 4-foot minimum water depth for the standard De-Icer models.

Adequate depth gives the motor access to more relatively warm water and provides the clearance needed for effective circulation.

Do Not Touch Bottom

Keep the motor elevated so it does not rest directly on lake or pond sediment.

Maintain Clearance

Adequate bottom clearance reduces the chance of pulling weeds, sediment, or debris into the propeller.

Use Deeper Water

When the dock itself is shallow, position the De-Icer in nearby deeper water and angle the flow toward the dock when the site allows it.

Account for Drawdown

Use expected winter water levels rather than assuming summer depth will remain unchanged.

Installation

Dock De-Icer Installation Basics

  1. Identify the protection area.
Determine which docks, pilings, lifts, boats, slips, seawalls, or shoreline structures must remain free from damaging ice buildup.
  2. Measure winter water depth.
    Allow for seasonal water-level changes.
  3. Select horsepower and voltage.
Match the motor to climate, depth, layout, power availability, and protection area.
  4. Choose the mount.
Use suspension ropes, a Universal or Industrial Dock Mount, Bottom Stand, or Oscillating Attachment.
  5. Choose the flow direction.
Vertical positioning produces a more circular pattern while angled positioning targets specific areas.
  6. Protect and organize the cord.
Use MagnaClips for compatible dock-side routing and add Protective Cord Wrap where fit is confirmed and abrasion protection is desired.
  7. Connect to the proper electrical supply.
Use the correctly grounded, GFCI-protected circuit required for the De-Icer.
  8. Add automatic control if desired.
Select a compatible temperature or timer control for the motor voltage.
  9. Test before freeze-up.
Verify motor operation, mount security, depth, direction, cord routing, and water circulation.
  10. Inspect throughout winter.
Weather, water levels, moving ice, snow, and electrical conditions can change during the season.

Safety

Dock De-Icer Safety Guidelines

Use GFCI Protection

Operate the De-Icer from the properly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical supply required for the installation.

Use the Proper Factory Cord

Choose a motor with the correct factory cord length instead of adding an extension cord to submerged equipment.

Never Enter Powered Water

Never enter the water while the De-Icer is operating or connected to power.

Mark Open Water

Use Thin Ice or Open Water signage, lighting, barriers, fencing, or other precautions appropriate for the location.

Disconnect Before Service

Disconnect electrical power before handling, cleaning, adjusting, or servicing the De-Icer.

Inspect Regularly

Automatic controls do not replace routine winter inspection of the motor, dock, electrical system, cable, and open-water area.

No De-Icer can prevent every form of winter ice damage. Moving ice caused by wind or current, extreme cold, shallow water, changing water levels, and other environmental conditions can exceed what a circulation system can control.

FAQs

Dock De-Icer FAQs

How does a Dock De-Icer work?

The submerged propeller moves relatively warmer bottom water toward the surface. The warmer water and continuous circulation help prevent or reduce ice formation around the protected structure.

Does the De-Icer heat the water?

No. It is a water circulator rather than a heating element.

What horsepower options are available?

Current North American De-Icers are available in 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP configurations.

How much thrust do the current models produce?

Current published specifications list 31 lb for the 1/2 HP 2400D, 37 lb for the 3/4 HP 3400 models, and 42 lb for the 1 HP 4400 models.

Which mounting option should I choose?

Use the included ropes for simple suspended installations. Choose a Universal Dock Mount when you want more precise depth and angle adjustment, an Industrial Mount for harsher environments, a Bottom Stand for suitable freestanding applications, or an Oscillating Attachment for broader coverage.

What does vertical suspension do?

Vertical suspension directs warmer water upward and typically creates a more circular open-water area.

What does angled suspension do?

Angling the motor creates a more directional flow that can target a dock section, shoreline, boat lift, slip, or other structure.

Can the De-Icer sit directly on the bottom?

No. Maintain adequate clearance beneath the motor so circulation is not restricted and sediment or debris is less likely to enter the propeller.

How deep does the De-Icer need to be?

Current North American model specifications list a 4-foot minimum water depth.

What should I do if my dock is in shallow water?

If deeper water is available nearby, the De-Icer can often be positioned in deeper water and angled toward the shallow dock area, provided the site and installation allow it.

When should I install my Dock De-Icer?

Install before significant ice forms whenever possible. Pre-freeze installation makes positioning, electrical setup, testing, and adjustment easier and safer.

What does the C-10 controller do?

The C-10 provides automatic temperature-based control for one compatible 120V De-Icer.

What does the C-20 controller do?

The C-20 combines temperature control with a 24-hour timer so a compatible 120V De-Icer can operate according to both weather and schedule.

Can I use a C-10 or C-20 on a 208–240V De-Icer?

No. C-10 and C-20 are intended for compatible 120V systems. Use the appropriate high-voltage control solution for 208–240V equipment.

What are MagnaClips?

MagnaClips are magnetic cord holders designed to organize waterfront power cords along compatible dock framing.

How many MagnaClips are included?

The current MagnaClip package includes 10 magnetic cord holders and ferritic steel mounting brackets.

What size cord fits inside MagnaClips?

Each MagnaClip accommodates cord up to approximately 1 inch in diameter. Multiple smaller cords can also share one holder when they fit properly.

How strong are MagnaClips?

The current specification lists approximately 20 lb of magnetic pull strength per holder.

Why can a MagnaClip release from the dock?

The magnetic connection is designed to hold during normal use but can separate from the mounting bracket under extreme cable tension, helping reduce excessive strain on the cord and connected equipment.

Can MagnaClips remain on the cord during storage?

Yes. Pull the magnetic holders away from the dock brackets and leave them positioned on the cord during seasonal storage. The brackets can remain installed at the dock.

What does Protective Cord Wrap do?

Protective Cord Wrap adds a braided outer layer around compatible power cable where additional resistance to abrasion from dock framing, rock, sand, or shoreline debris is desired.

Do I need to remove the plug to install Protective Cord Wrap?

No. The split-wrap design installs around an existing compatible cord without removing the factory plug.

Is Protective Cord Wrap specifically made for the Kasco De-Icer cord?

The current Weeders Digest Protective Cord Wrap product was originally sized and marketed for AquaThruster motor and oscillator cables. Confirm that the selected wrap fits your specific De-Icer cord diameter and desired length before ordering it for this application.

Can I use MagnaClips and Protective Cord Wrap together?

Yes, when the cord and wrap fit correctly. Protective Cord Wrap provides an outer protective layer while MagnaClips organize the cable route along compatible dock framing.

Can I use an extension cord?

Select the appropriate factory cord length rather than adding an extension cord to submerged electrical equipment.

Do I need GFCI protection?

Yes. Use the properly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical supply required for the installation.

Can I enter the water while the De-Icer is operating?

No. Never enter the water while the De-Icer or other waterfront electrical equipment is operating or connected to power.

Should I mark the open-water area?

Yes. Clearly identify open water and thin ice with appropriate signs, lights, barriers, fencing, or other precautions required for the location.
