Description

Dock Bubbler & Winter De-Icing System

Protect Your Dock, Boat Lift & Waterfront From Winter Ice Damage

The Dock Bubbler is a powerful waterfront circulation system designed to help keep water open around docks, piers, pilings, boat lifts, slips, boats, retaining walls, and other structures exposed to damaging winter ice.

Rather than using a heating element, the submerged motor uses a high-thrust propeller to pull naturally warmer water from below and push it toward the surface. That continuous circulation helps reduce ice formation in the area surrounding your waterfront structure.

Choose from 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP configurations and select the mounting system that best matches your dock, water depth, current, and the shape of the area you want to protect.

For automatic operation, add a compatible thermostat or timer controller. For a cleaner installation, add MagnaClips to route the power cord along your dock and Protective Cord Wrap to help protect exposed cable from abrasion and shoreline wear.

Water Movement Is What Keeps the Area Open

Move Warmer Bottom Water The submerged propeller pulls relatively warmer water from below and circulates it toward the surface.
Protect Waterfront Structures Reduce ice buildup around docks, pilings, boat lifts, slips, seawalls, boats, and other in-water property.
Direct the Flow Install vertically for a more circular opening or angle the motor to push water toward a specific area.
Automate Winter Operation Compatible thermostats and timers can reduce unnecessary runtime while maintaining protection during freezing conditions.
Is a Dock Bubbler actually an air bubbler? No. This system is commonly called a dock bubbler, but it does not use an air compressor and diffuser. It is a propeller-driven water circulator or de-icer that moves warmer water toward the surface.
Designed for Winter Protection

Protect More Than Just the Dock

Ice can place substantial pressure on pilings, dock frames, boat lifts, seawalls, boats, and other fixed structures. Freeze-and-thaw cycles and changing water levels can also pull, lift, bend, or damage equipment trapped in ice.

The Dock Bubbler maintains water movement around these vulnerable areas so solid ice is less likely to lock tightly around the structure.

The open-water area also allows greater winter gas exchange between the atmosphere and the water, which can be beneficial in enclosed ponds and other situations where oxygen depletion is a concern.

DOCK

Docks & Piers

Protect pilings, legs, framing, and other dock components from damaging ice pressure.

LIFT

Boat Lifts

Keep moving water around submerged lift components and other areas vulnerable to freeze-in.

BOAT

Boats & Slips

Open water and thin ice are dangerous. Clearly mark the de-iced area with Thin Ice or Open Water signs, lighting, barriers, fencing, or other measures appropriate for your property and required by local regulations. Never enter the water while electrical equipment is operating or connected to power.

How It Works

How Does a Dock Bubbler Keep Water From Freezing?

During winter, relatively warmer and denser water remains below the colder surface layer. The Dock Bubbler uses a submerged propeller to move that warmer water upward.

  1. The motor operates below the surface.
The submerged propeller begins moving a high volume of water.
  2. Warmer water is pulled from below.
Water from deeper in the lake or pond is directed toward the surface.
  3. The surface water continues moving.
The combination of relatively warmer water and circulation makes ice formation more difficult.
  4. An open-water area develops.
The size and shape depend on horsepower, depth, temperature, current, wind, snow, and mounting orientation.
  5. Your waterfront structure remains less confined by ice.
The goal is to reduce damaging freeze pressure around docks, pilings, lifts, boats, or other protected structures.
Vertical vs. angled mounting: Vertical installation generally produces a more circular opening. Angling the motor creates an elongated flow pattern that can push warmer water toward a specific portion of the dock, shoreline, or slip.

Sizing Guide

Choose Horsepower Based on Winter Conditions & Coverage

The same Dock Bubbler can create very different open-water areas depending on air temperature, water depth, installation angle, snow cover, wind, current, surrounding structures, and local water conditions.

Dock bubbler deicer horsepower sizing chart showing estimated open water by temperature and mounting orientation

1/2 HP

A practical starting point for smaller protection areas and locations with less severe winter conditions.

3/4 HP

A common choice for residential docks in colder northern climates where additional thrust and coverage are needed.

1 HP

The highest-thrust standard option for larger protection areas, severe winter conditions, or demanding waterfront layouts.

Coverage charts are estimates, not guarantees. Water depth, wind, current, snow, shoreline shape, structures, and unusual winter weather can substantially change the amount of water that remains open.

Mounting Options

Choose the Dock Bubbler Mount That Fits Your Waterfront

How the motor is mounted determines its depth, stability, direction of flow, and the shape of the open-water area.

Dock bubbler rope suspension showing warmer bottom water circulating upward

Mooring Rope / Sling Suspension

Two 20-foot suspension ropes are included with the motor.

Hang the Dock Bubbler vertically for a more circular open-water area or suspend it at an angle to direct water toward a particular dock section, shoreline, lift, or boat slip.

This is often the simplest installation when secure attachment points are available above the water.

Universal Dock Mount

The Universal Dock Mount creates a more rigid installation and allows both depth and angle adjustment.

It is especially useful around docks exposed to waves, changing water movement, or other conditions where rope suspension may allow too much movement.

Current Universal Mount systems use a customer-supplied 1-inch nominal pipe.

View Universal Dock Mount

Bottom Stand

Use the optional freestanding Bottom Stand when a dock or pier attachment point is not available or when the motor needs to be positioned away from the structure.

Oscillating Attachment

The optional oscillating system rotates the Dock Bubbler through a programmed sweep to move water over a larger or irregular area.

Industrial Mount

For harsher installations, a heavier-duty Industrial Mount is also available by request and uses customer-supplied 1.5-inch nominal pipe.

Dock bubbler mounting options including rope dock mount bottom stand and oscillator

Oscillating Mount

Cover More Waterfront With an Oscillating Dock Bubbler

A fixed Dock Bubbler continuously directs its water flow through one pattern. The optional Oscillating Attachment rotates the motor back and forth so circulation can sweep across a much larger section of the waterfront.

This can be valuable for long docks, multiple slips, marina layouts, or situations where one fixed flow direction cannot reach every vulnerable area.

Fixed dock bubbler compared with oscillating dock bubbler open water coverage

Programmable Sweep

Set the rotation pattern to move water throughout the portion of waterfront that needs protection.

Adjustable Height

The mount can be positioned for the required operating depth and site conditions.

12V Oscillator

The oscillating mechanism uses a low-voltage 12V control system.

Large Coverage Potential

Proper oscillation can substantially increase the area influenced by a single Dock Bubbler compared with one fixed flow direction.

Oscillator packages are site specific. Call 877-224-4899 with your dock layout, motor size, water depth, and photos for configuration help.

Timers & Controllers

Automate Dock Bubbler Operation

Automatic controls can reduce unnecessary runtime by operating the Dock Bubbler according to outdoor temperature, schedule, or both.

Use Both for the Cleanest Dock Bubbler Installation

Protect the Cable Use Protective Cord Wrap where the power cord contacts abrasive shoreline, lake-bottom, or dock surfaces.
Route the Cable Use MagnaClips to establish an organized path along compatible dock framing.
Reduce Loose Cord A defined cord route helps keep excess cable away from common walking and working areas.
Make Seasonal Setup Easier Leave MagnaClips on the cable during storage and reconnect them to the dock brackets next season.
These accessories solve different problems. Protective Cord Wrap helps shield the cable jacket from abrasion. MagnaClips manage where the cable runs along your dock. Using both provides the most complete cord-management setup.

Installation

How to Install a Dock Bubbler

  1. Identify what needs protection.
Determine whether you are protecting the dock, pilings, boat lift, boat, slip, shoreline structure, or a combination of areas.
  2. Measure expected winter water depth.
Use winter depth rather than assuming summer water levels remain unchanged.
  3. Select horsepower.
Choose the motor size according to climate, coverage requirements, water depth, and site conditions.
  4. Choose the mounting method.
Use the included mooring ropes, Universal Dock Mount, Bottom Stand, or Oscillating Attachment.
  5. Choose the flow direction.
Use vertical positioning for more circular coverage or angle the motor toward a specific structure or shallow area.
  6. Protect and route the cord.
Add Protective Cord Wrap where abrasion is likely and use MagnaClips to organize compatible dock-side cable runs.
  7. Connect to the correct electrical supply.
Use a properly grounded, GFCI-protected circuit that matches the motor voltage.
  8. Add automatic controls if desired.
Install the appropriate timer or thermostat controller for your configuration.
  9. Test before freeze-up.
Confirm motor operation, depth, direction, mount security, cord routing, and water movement before significant ice develops.
  10. Inspect throughout winter.
Check the system after major weather changes, water-level changes, snow events, or moving ice.

Water Depth

Water Depth & Dock Bubbler Placement

Current motor specifications list a 4-foot minimum depth. Available warm-water volume and bottom clearance are important to successful winter circulation.

Maintain Bottom Clearance

Do not allow the submerged motor itself to rest directly on the lake or pond bottom.

Use Deeper Water When Possible

If your dock sits in shallow water, place the circulator in nearby deeper water and angle the flow toward the dock.

Plan for Winter Water Levels

Seasonal drawdown may leave the system shallower than expected later in winter.

Avoid Surface Splashing

A unit positioned too close to the surface may splash instead of developing effective underwater circulation.

Very shallow water can significantly reduce de-icing performance. There is less warmer bottom water available for the motor to circulate when the water column is shallow.

Safety

Dock Bubbler Safety

GFCI Protection

Use the properly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical circuit required for the installation.

No Extension Cords

Use the appropriate factory power-cord length rather than adding an extension cord to the submerged equipment.

Never Enter Powered Water

Never enter the water while the Dock Bubbler is operating or connected to electrical power.

Mark Open Water

Clearly identify thin-ice and open-water areas throughout the winter.

Disconnect Before Service

Disconnect power before handling, adjusting, cleaning, inspecting, or servicing the unit.

Inspect Regularly

Automatic controls do not replace regular inspection of the dock, motor position, cable, power supply, and surrounding ice.

A Dock Bubbler cannot prevent every type of ice damage. Moving ice, severe cold, shallow water, changing levels, wind, current, and ice that freezes to the bottom can limit any circulation system.

FAQs

Dock Bubbler FAQs

What is a dock bubbler?

A Dock Bubbler is a submerged water-circulation system used to help maintain open water around docks and other waterfront structures during freezing weather.

Does this Dock Bubbler use air bubbles?

No. Despite the common name "dock bubbler," this system uses a submerged propeller to circulate water. It is not a compressor-and-diffuser aeration system.

Does a Dock Bubbler heat the water?

No. It circulates naturally warmer bottom water toward the surface rather than generating heat.

What can a Dock Bubbler protect?

Common applications include docks, piers, pilings, boat lifts, boats, boat slips, seawalls, marina structures, shoreline structures, and other in-water equipment vulnerable to ice.

What horsepower Dock Bubbler should I choose?

The correct horsepower depends on winter temperature, water depth, dock dimensions, mounting orientation, current, wind, snow, and the size of the area that needs protection. Contact Weeders Digest if you are unsure.

What horsepower options are available?

The current motor family includes 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP options.

How much thrust does the Dock Bubbler produce?

Current published specifications list approximately 31 lb for the 1/2 HP model, 37 lb for the 3/4 HP models, and 42 lb for the 1 HP models.

How deep does the Dock Bubbler need to be?

Current specifications list a 4-foot minimum water depth. Actual positioning should also provide adequate bottom clearance and avoid mounting so close to the surface that the propeller splashes.

Can the Dock Bubbler sit directly on the lake bottom?

No. Maintain adequate clearance between the motor and the bottom so debris is not pulled into the propeller and effective circulation can develop.

What if my dock is in shallow water?

When deeper water is available nearby, position the Dock Bubbler in that deeper area and angle the flow toward the shallower dock or shoreline.

Are ropes included?

Yes. Current packages include two 20-foot mooring ropes for suspended installation.

Can I angle the Dock Bubbler?

Yes. Angled installation creates a more directional, elongated flow pattern. Vertical installation generally creates a more circular opening.

When should I use the Universal Dock Mount?

Use the Universal Dock Mount when you want a more rigid attachment with adjustable depth and angle, especially where waves or water movement make rope suspension less stable.

Can I use the Dock Bubbler without a dock?

Yes. The optional Bottom Stand provides a freestanding installation method for appropriate locations where a dock or pier mount is unavailable.

What does the Oscillating Attachment do?

It rotates the Dock Bubbler through a programmed area so water circulation can sweep across more waterfront instead of remaining pointed in one fixed direction.

Can I automate my Dock Bubbler?

Yes. Compatible thermostat and timer controls can automate operation based on temperature, schedule, or both.

What is the C-10 controller?

The C-10 is a thermostat-only controller for one compatible 120V unit. It switches the motor according to outdoor air temperature.

What is the C-20 controller?

The C-20 combines thermostat control with a 24-hour timer, giving you both temperature and time-of-day control for one compatible 120V motor.

Can I use the 7-Day Outdoor Timer?

Only when the connected motor remains within the timer's published electrical ratings. The current Weeders Digest 7-Day Digital Timer is rated up to 3/4 HP, so it should not be assumed compatible with a 1 HP Dock Bubbler.

What are MagnaClips?

MagnaClips are magnetic cord holders that help route Dock Bubbler and other waterfront cords along compatible dock framing.

How many MagnaClips are included?

The current MagnaClips system includes 10 magnetic cord holders with ferritic steel mounting brackets.

How large of a cord will MagnaClips hold?

Each MagnaClip accommodates a cord up to approximately 1 inch in diameter, and multiple smaller cords can fit inside one holder when appropriate.

How strong are MagnaClips?

Each holder uses approximately 20 lb of magnetic pull strength during normal use.

Why are MagnaClips magnetic instead of permanently attached?

The magnetic connection keeps the cord organized while allowing the holder to release from its bracket if the cable experiences unusually high tension, which can help reduce excessive strain on the cord, plug, dock, and connected equipment.

Can MagnaClips stay attached during seasonal storage?

Yes. Pull the magnetic holders away from the dock brackets and leave them attached to the cord. The brackets can remain installed for faster setup the following season.

What does Protective Cord Wrap do?

Protective Cord Wrap adds a braided abrasion-resistant layer around the power cable where it may contact rock, sand, dock edges, shoreline debris, or other abrasive surfaces.

Do I have to remove the plug to install Protective Cord Wrap?

No. The split-sleeve design opens around the existing power cord so the factory plug does not need to be removed.

Can I use MagnaClips and Protective Cord Wrap together?

Yes. Protective Cord Wrap protects the cable itself while MagnaClips organize the route of the cable along compatible dock framing. Using both provides a more complete cord-management solution.

Does the Dock Bubbler add oxygen to the water?

The motor is a water circulator rather than an air diffuser. By maintaining open water and moving the water column, the system can support winter gas exchange between the atmosphere and water, but it should not be described as directly injecting compressed air or oxygen.

Can a Dock Bubbler prevent winter fish kills?

Maintaining open water can support gas exchange and may help in some winter oxygen-management situations, but fish kills can have multiple causes and no Dock Bubbler can guarantee prevention.

Do I need GFCI protection?

Yes. Operate the system from the correctly grounded and GFCI-protected electrical supply required for the installation.

Can I use an extension cord?

Use the appropriate factory power-cord length rather than adding an extension cord to submerged electrical equipment.

Should I mark the open-water area?

Yes. Clearly identify open water and thin ice using signage, lights, barriers, fencing, or other safety precautions appropriate for the property and required locally.

Does the Dock Bubbler have a warranty?

The current motor unit includes a three-year limited manufacturer warranty.
