Description

Navigate is an aquatic granular formulation of 2, 4-D. A granular aquatic herbicide, which selectively controls some of the most troublesome aquatic plants. These include water milfoil, coontail, and spatterdock. Gradual release and systemic action ensures complete kill of the entire plant.

Navigate is formulated on special heat treated attaclay granules that resist rapid decomposition in water, sink quickly to lake or pond bottoms and release the weed killing chemical in the critical root zone area. This product is designed to selectively control the weeds listed on the label. While certain weeds may be suppressed, control may be incomplete. Reduced control may occur in lakes where water replacement comes from bottom springs.

Initial effects occur in 7 to 10 days, indicated by brittle stems and curling leaf tips. Full kill will occur in 3 to 5 weeks. Once dead, weeds sink to the bottom and decompose.

The most comprehensive up to date peer review of all data pertaining to 2,4-D was published by the Journal of American College of Toxicology in 1992. As far as the scientific evidence is concerned 2,4-D ...in aquatic situations under label directions....is effective, it decomposes easily, it does not accumulate in living tissue.

Application

Navigate granular herbicide is very easy to apply using a scoop, cup, or a hand spreader. Just simply scoop up some Navigate granules and throw them directly onto the milfoil, water lilies, or coontail. It is best to treat the vegetation early in the season while it is still actively growing.

The key to proper applications is to estimate your square footage of weeds and then make sure to get the right amount of Navigate evenly spread throughout the area.

Navigate Example:

Floating and Emergent Weeds: Maximum of 21.0 pounds per acre-foot. See label for complete directions and rates.

Submersed Weeds: Maximum of 56.8 pounds per acre-foot. See label for complete directions and rates.

66ft x 66ft = 0.1 acre X 10ft average = 1 acre foot
2ppm = 28.4 pounds per acre foot

4ppm = 56.8 pounds per acre foot

*Consult Label for Exact Doses & Important Application Directions. Rates vary depending upon depth and plant types. Dose requirements are less for whole water body treatments like a pond.

For Best Results

For best results, spread Navigate in the spring and early summer, during the time weeds start to grow. If desired, this timing can be checked by sampling the lake bottom in areas heavily infested with weeds the year before. If treatments are delayed until weeds form a dense mat or reach the surface, two treatments may be necessary. Make the second treatment when weeds show signs of recovery.

Notices

Heavy clay, mud, or silt build up may reduce root absorption by effectively sealing the roots. Early season application or more than one application may overcome this problem. Water movement in the form of currents or bottom springs may wash herbicide from the treatment site and reduce effectiveness.

Avoid churning the water in the treatment site for 72 hours following application. This will help insure maximum herbicide is available for absorption by the weeds.

Wait about 10 days and then go back to that same area again and treat any remaining milfoil.

*All pesticides can be harmful to health and the environment if misused. Read the label and follow directions. Consult with your local regulatory agency before applying herbicides and algaecides to public waters. There are herbicides from other states that are either not licensed in Wisconsin or Illinois, or are not recommended by ABI.

A WI DNR Aquatic Plant Control Permit or DATCP Fish Farm License is required in WI in order to apply algaecides or herbicides. In addition ponds and lakes with overflows not contained on the property are required to obtain a WPDES permit. Illinois Residents are required to obtiain NPDES permits through the Illinois EPA.

In order to apply chemicals in liquid form within Wisconsin, the applicator must be licensed with the State.

FAQ

FAQs

What aquatic plants does Navigate specifically control?

We recommend it for targeting milfoil, coontail, water lilies (white and yellow), water shield, spatterdock, water chestnut, and a variety of other lake

How does the granular formula enhance effectiveness?

Navigate granules sink quickly to the root zone, and slowly release active ingredients for precise root uptake.

When and how should I apply it for best results?

Broadcast evenly in spring or early summer when weeds are just growing. Use a spreader or scoop to apply granules directly where weeds are prese

How fast will I notice results after treatment?

Initial effects, like curling leaves or brittle stems, appear within 7–10 days. Full die-off happens over 3–5 weeks.

How much area does one 50 lb bag cover?

One bag treats approximately ½ acre at standard rates. Rates can vary depending on the targeted weed and conditions in your water environment - be sure to consult label instructions before applying

Are there use restrictions after application?

Yes—observe a 24-hour no swimming entry and 7-day irrigation, livestock, and drinking water restrictions per the label.

Can I re-treat the same area if weeds return?

Absolutely—if regrowth occurs within 6–8 weeks, a second application may be needed, though most areas require just one treatment.

Is it safe for fish and native plants?

Yes, it’s selective—targeting specific invasive weeds while minimizing impact to native plants. It’s also low-risk to fish and wildlife when used according to label instructions.

Are permits required for use in lakes or streams?

Possibly—many states require a permit for chemical lake treatments. Always check with local agencies before applying in public or regulated waters.

    Works well

Had an issue with lilly pads in my pond. In less than a week saw obvious results. Will use this instead of spray since I can use it early in the growing season and have much less dead matter in pond. Great product.
