The Aquatic Vegetation Groomer (AVG) is a gas motor powered underwater weed cutting machine that works similar to the weed wackers you use for trimming weeds in your yard. The AVG can be used underwater because it has a “sealed” gear box which makes it ideal for cutting aquatic plants in up to 4 feet of water depth! The gear box and cutter blades are what makes this tool so unique. Unlike traditional seaweed cutters, the cutting blades on the AVG "reciprocate" instead of spin. This makes the machine easy to control and eliminates splash back from the water. This powerful machine is capable of cutting tough, dense weeds such as cattails, reeds, lily pads, and even thick wood stemmed plants.
We have sold hundreds of these units to individual lake property owners as well as Lake & Pond Management Service Providers that cut, remove, and manage weeds on peoples beaches and shorelines. The Aquatic Vegetation Groomer is also compatible with our float attachment, so operators can cut and mow down aquatic vegetation, lily pads & cattails in hard to reach places. We offer many other tools designed for cutting lake & pond weeds but the AVG is the best tool for cutting cattails and other larger thick stemmed emergent aquatic vegetation.
- Reciprocating cutting blades
- Sealed gear box
- Use up to 4’ water depth
- Powerful 24 cc 2-cycle engine
- 2-year warranty
- Optional shoulder strap is available
- Optional float mount available
Unlike traditional weed wackers that spin in a circular fashion, the AVG features two circular reciprocating blades that move back and forth to create the cutting action. Because the reciprocating blades move back forth you are able to cut even the thickest aquatic vegetation at the lake base bottom. In our experience, you shouldn’t need replacement blades unless the product has been abused or you dinged it against a large rock, but extra blades are available should need them.
The AVG is powered by a 24 cc 2-cycle engine that uses a standard oil gas mixture. The powerful engine makes it our recommended product for cutting thick rooted aquatic plants like cattails, bull rush, and lily pads with ease! Lake Weeder’s Digest has sold the AVG for over 10 years, so we are very familiar with its reliability and durability as it’s backed by the manufacturer's peace of mind 2-year warranty.
The Hand held AVG is ideal for clearing thick aquatic plants in lakes and ponds up to 4 Feet of water depth. If you need to clear an area larger than 25" x 25" then it is recommended that you add the shoulder strap. Even though the AVG only weighs 19 lbs., it is better to leverage the weight of the machine on your shoulders instead of your arms.
AVG with Float Attachment: The Float Attachment for the Aquatic Vegetation Groomer is a great option to have for many reasons. It helps you cut cattails, Lily pads, reeds and virtually every kind of aquatic weed that are located in those hard to reach areas. This floating frame mount arrives almost completely assembled so there is no down time. It is light weight and made from durable aluminum so it will not rust. The Float Attachment makes it easy to switch back and forth from hand held to float mounted cutting jobs.
- Comes standard with a 2-piece "pistol grip" handle that is 7 ft long. (Optional handle extensions are available for a total reach of 15 ft)
- The frame features a depth adjustment plategiving you the ability to cut seaweed and cattails up to 4' deep.
If you already own the Hand Held Aquatic Vegetation Groomer and would like to ADD the float option please purchase it separately by clicking HERE

Our lake shoreline was neglected for many years and was very overgrown. Cut through our cattails and various other weeds with ease and in quick time. Buy the shoulder strap when you order it. Makes it very easy on the body.
The price is a bargain when you consider how well it works and how quick you can remove the weeds and get back to enjoying your summer at your lake. This is the right tool for the job.
Lots of horse power and dose an amazingly good and fast job. The hard part is the clean up.
Our pond was extremely overgrown with cattails so we hired an excavator for a day to do a major clean out. After this I used the AGV working from an 8 by 8 raft to finish where the excavator could not reach. I agree with others that this is a good workout by the results are certainly worth the effort. The machine worked perfectly. I cut down to the root in three feet of water and right into the mud. Amazing! Looking forward to keeping our pond looking great.
We own an 11 acre lake, and after trying to manually cut the cattails with a garden shears, I broke down and bought the AVG. It worked great, cut through the cattails like butter!
It works just like it was described.
I have 200' of shore line to care for on one of Michigan's great lakes (Lake Huron). We've had many years of low water levels, and the phragmite weeds have grown quite thick. Water has come back nicely, and all weed roots are 12" to 36" under the waterline now. I estimate that I've cleared about 8000 square feet of weeds in about 20 hours of cutting. Highly recommend (2) people for this kind of job...one cutting and the other clearing. Blades still seem sharp, and motor is strong. Note of caution: wear gloves and don't drop motor in the water while cutting. I'm 49 year old male in fair physical shape. After about 6 hours of work, I was done for the day. It's not an easy job, but without this tool, this job could not be done manually!
Works well at cutting fragments.
It requires good upper body strength to use for any length of time. Cutting vegetation in deep water really requires strength & endurance. Outside of that the product is Very Good!
I bought the AVG this past summer, but haven't had a chance to use it till this fall. The cattail tops are all dried up and tuff. I thought it might not cut as good as it might on green ones, but I was surprised at how well it cut them! The AVG might cost a little more than your average weed wacker, but for what it can do above and below the water line, it does what I need to do, by keeping my shoreline clear of cattails. The AVG works just like you see in the videos and I would recommend it to anyone with a cattail problem.
I used it to cut Bulrushes out by the root which meant sticking it into the mucky bottom. It cut flawlessly. Where they were the thickest on the shoreline, I cut them off at the bottom. I did an area which was about 60' x 100' in 4 hours. I have pictures too. A retired GM Engineer who owned the property said it was the greatest tool he had ever seen and used it for about 1/2 hr and did not want to give it up. I was skeptical at first, but a true believer at the end. This thing works!
After one full day of use I accomplished more than I thought possible. I have only used the AGV once so far but, I am impressed with how well it worked on my cattail issue in my front pond. I have much more to do and I think this was absolutely my best option for a tool to make it easier. More to come...
Top notch trimmer. Trims to the dirt without throwing debris. Cuts underwater. And the service from WD is first class.
I had planed on buying a blade for my weed eater to save money. Upon further checking I decided that would be a bad idea.
I'm glad of my decision as AVG works great. I am clearing a path 15ft x 75 ft. and in a few hours I am 1/4 done. The
only thing that would be better if it could cut some of the heavy wood branches but you can't have everything. I would recommend this product anytime.
