Physical Characteristics
Leaves:
- 1-3 leaves
- 1/16 to 1/8 inches long
- Light-green
- Nearly flat on both sides
- Flat, oval shape
Fruit:
- Small, bladder-like shape
- Slightly winged
Seeds:
- Long rigid seed or smooth with spongy outer layer
Roots:
- Single root
- Cluster together with other duckweed in groups of 2 to 5+
Where Does it Grow?
Duckweeds tend to grow in dense colonies in quiet water, undisturbed by wave action. Often more than one species of duckweed will be associated together in these colonies.

Since Duckweed is a floating plant it can be removed by raking or skimming the ponds surface. It has the ability to multiply rapidly and may take multiple cleanings throughout the year to keep it under control using a rake or skimmer.

Our parachute skimmer measure 5 feet in width and comes with a 24 foot pull line. It is constructed of 2 horizontal bars, one which has a floating device, and a screening net.
When you throw the parachute skimmer into the lake or pond, the bottom bar drops and creates an opening to collect Duckweed into the net as you pull it back to shore or to your boat.

The Aqua Thruster comes standard with a ½ horsepower 110 volt motor that is capable of blowing muck away up to 30 feet. We also have ¾, 1 and 2 horsepower motors available and an optional oscillator that will blow Duckweed away 200 feet or more in 360 degrees.

Herbicide control is a great option for Duckweed because you can literally apply the herbicide and then sit back and let it do its work. Most herbicides can control Duckweed throughout the season and only needs to be applied once a year.
