Seasonal Care
Proper Winter Storage Steps
Follow these steps before freeze-up to protect your pump, hoses and filter and make spring startup quick and easy.
-
1
Disconnect electrical power.
Unplug the pump or shut off the breaker. Never work on the pump while it is energized.
-
2
Remove the suction line from the lake.
Pull the suction hose, intake/filter, check valve or foot valve, and any other components out of the water.
-
3
Drain the pump completely.Most Important
Open the pump's drain plug(s) and remove the priming/fill plug if applicable. Tilt the pump slightly if necessary to help trapped water escape. This is the most important step—water left inside the pump can freeze, expand, and crack the pump housing.
-
4
Drain the suction hose and discharge plumbing.
Lay hoses out so all low spots drain. Drain the filter housing, check valve, fittings, sprinkler manifold, and any above-ground plumbing that could hold water.
-
5
Clean the intake and filter.
Remove weeds, algae, sand, sediment, and debris. Rinse the screen/filter and allow it to dry before storage.
-
6
Inspect the system.
Check the suction hose for cracks, damaged cam-locks/fittings, worn gaskets, loose clamps, damaged electrical cords, and signs of leaks. Replacing inexpensive seals now can prevent priming problems next spring.
-
7
Store the pump indoors in a dry location.
A garage, shop, or basement is preferable. Protect the motor from moisture and rodents. Do not store the pump outside with the assumption that draining most of the water is sufficient.
-
8
Leave the pump drained for the winter.
Don't refill it with water. For most centrifugal lake-irrigation pumps, you generally do not need to fill the pump housing with RV antifreeze if you've completely drained and stored the pump indoors, unless the pump manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise.
Spring Startup
Before reinstalling it, replace the drain plug, reconnect the suction system, inspect the gaskets/O-rings, and prime the pump completely with water before starting it.
Never run a centrifugal irrigation pump dry.
